Have you ever faced a problem of chapped or dry lips? Don’t worry, you are not the only one; a lot of people face this problem especially during winters. One of the main reasons for chapped lips is dehydration, which leads to

dryness and cracks in the delicate skin on your lips. A few other causes are too much sun exposure or constant licking of lips when they are dry. A lot of people think that by licking their lips they are hydrating them, but in reality the saliva just steals away the moisture, worsening the condition. If proper care is not taken, chapped lips can be very painful too. The first step towards a cure is to drink a lot of water, which keeps your body hydrated; but this is not enough.

Cracked lips can usually be treated using home remedies. Treating cracked lips in two steps:

1. Exfoliate your lips.

Before applying any sort of ointment, remove the dead skin using an exfoliation method. This will expose the fresh skin and help your lips start to heal. Don’t rub your lips too harshly – that could make things worse. Gently massage them.

Get rid of the dry skin on your lips with this lip scrub. Mixing:

  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon of coconut oil.

Apply the mixture on your lips and make small circular motions using your fingers. Do this for about a minute. At the end wash with a cloth and pat your lips dry.

2. Apply oils or ointment

For an ultra-moisturizing lip treatment, rub a little oil on your lips. It will sooth and moisturize your lips while also protecting them from further damage.

Start using coconut oil instead an everyday lip balm. Apply a small amount of the oil on your lips several times daily.
Prepare your own lip balm at home by mixing:

  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil,
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • ¾ teaspoon of honey.

Use a spoon to stir well the ingredients well. Then, store the resulted mixture in a small container with a lid. Use it throughout the day.

Tips

Apply coconut oil before going to bed to moisture your lips while sleeping.

Use the homemade lip scrub once a week or when needed for lips exfoliation. If you use the scrub too much, your lips may become red or irritated.
